The Power of Praise
The basis of the book is to praise God for everything. Easier said than done if you ask me. I was continually struggling within myself...how can I praise God for the bad things? A friend has cancer...so I should praise God? We are having financial trouble....praise God for that? My heart is broken....praise now? I was in such turmoil over this. The bible says to praise God but I felt like I was lying when I tried to praise Him in those situations.
In reading this book, something clicked inside me. You have to choose whether or not you believe God's word. That's what it boils down to. The Bible says in Romans 8:28 "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." If you truly believe that then you know God is working out your life for your good. Although it might not be the thing we are asking for, it might not be what we are hoping for....God is working it out for our good, and His glory.
So do I believe that verse? I thought I did before but I also thought that the enemy was pushing so hard against me that he was somehow making these bad things happen in my life. I prayed against the enemy, I fought against the enemy, I did everything I thought I was supposed to do. What I didn't really think about was the fact that God was sovereign.
I had to go back and re-evaluate my beliefs about God. If He is sovereign, then He allows (or doesn't allow) certain things in my life. Maybe they do come from the enemy, but God allows it. That was a hard concept for me to comprehend.
And then there were my emotions....my heart was broken at the thought of my loving Father allowing something "bad" to come into my life. Why would He do that to me? When I say I struggled, I mean I STRUGGLED with it. But in reading this book, so many examples were given when the person involved might not have believed at first but decided just to give it a try. The things that happened as a result of praise...well, you need to read the book!
So I tried it. My prayers mostly went like this.."God, I praise You. I don't know why You are allowing this, but I am praising You anyway. Please help my emotions to catch up with scripture." At first I felt stupid. My head and heart were at war with each other. But each day as I praised, I felt more at peace.
One morning I was praying for our school. We have not had the enrollment that we had hoped for although we are certain that this is the place God has for us. So I gave it to God. I told Him that I was praising Him for this situation, even though I didn't understand it. But I was being obedient and praising Him. When I got to school, our day began just like many others. But about an hour into the day, we had not ONE, but TWO children enroll..and the promise of a third! Can you believe that? I started telling all of the ladies I work with about my prayers that day. So I have seen it for myself that it works.
Now don't get me wrong, I know there are hard things out there that will be more challenging to praise God for. I'm going through one such situation right now. But I am trying my hardest to praise Him for all of it. He is the one in charge and I owe my very life to Him. I will continue to believe the promises God lays out for us in the Bible and put my emotions aside...PRAISE GOD!!

Thankfulness
Trauma or Thanks
“…in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” I Thess 5:18
I was trying to figure out how to survive the highly emotional encounters with the bipolar loved ones in my life. Right In That Moment – what do I DO? One counselor (and yes, I have needed counselors) told me to give thanks…as in “give thanks in all things, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
I teethed on the pews, so I knew that verse, but frankly, not to be disrespectful or anything, I could NOT figure out how to give thanks in those moments. Finally, after many years, and at the risk of being hit by lightening or something, I emotionally pushed back. “Really? Am I supposed to say, ‘Thank you Jesus they are yelling at me right now?…or thank You they are so low they literally cannot face the day, or their responsibilities?…or I just can’t thank You enough that their emotions are so magnified they literally can’t tell they are wearing me out or squashing me like a bug??’” I felt that not only were they expecting too much out of me, but so was God.
I praise God for that counselor now. I get it. And it literally turns the tide for me emotionally so I do not “lose” radio contact with God as quickly. It’s been a shield, a strength, a solace. Probably not new to you, but since that day, my “thank-you” now sound something like these…
–as my bipolar loved one vents all his/her emotions towards me….
Jesus, I thank You that You know this is too much for me. Thank You for not telling me everything You feel! Thank You for only telling me what is for my good. Thank you for always keeping in mind that I am dust.
–as my bipolar loved one blames me for not making it “all better”…
Jesus, I thank You that YOU know I can’t fix this. All might and power rest with YOU, not me. Thank You that in every way necessary You made it “all better” on the Cross, giving hope that when I get to heaven it WILL be all better!
–as my bipolar loved one exhausts me emotionally…
Jesus, thank You that You are not bipolar. I don’t have to shield myself emotionally from You, because You always keep in mind how I am made. Thank you for specifically inviting me to come TO You when I am weary and heavy laden, and thank you for giving me rest. Thank you for being the kind of God that leads at a pace suited for women and children. (Not bipolar speeds.)
–as my bipolar one expects me to understand what he/she is thinking, and sort it out…
Jesus, I am thanking You right now that YOU understand what he/she is thinking. You understand his/her thought from far away, even before he/she say it. Thank You for having a mind big enough to wrap around all this. I am not omniscient and You know it. Thank you.
–as my bipolar loved one makes a mountain out of a molehill…
Jesus, thank You that You never exaggerate, minimize, or distort what it true. You are precise, true, dependable.
–when my bipolar loved one is all over the map…
Thank you Jesus for being the SAME. Yesterday, today, and forever. Thank you that when You make a decision towards me (to listen, love, forgive, understand) You do not change Your mind later.
There are many more…and if YOU have more to add, I’d love to hear them. Truthful thanksgiving is a life raft…
Thankfully,
Joan
Thank you Joan for posting from your heart. It has made all the difference in my life. And thank You Lord, for showing me the way!

Power of Praise
My problem is that I don't feel like praising God. I am struggling. A man is in a hospital room dying of cancer. I don't want to praise God while this man and his family suffer.
The miracle I've prayed for, for almost 3 years now, hasn't happened yet. I don't want to praise God while I wait.
The job I was told was mine has changed. The terms are different and I don't know what to do about it. I don't want to praise God while I weigh my options.
I know the Bible says to praise Him. It says He is worthy. It says He is in control of it all, so we are to praise Him in His wisdom. But I'm struggling. I don't want to praise Him and feel fake, when what I really want to do is cry. And ask "WHY???" I don't want to pretend to love His wisdom when it doesn't match what I want for my life or the life of others I see. I don't want to be a hypocrite, opening my mouth to give Him praise when inside I don't really feel it.
I've heard that this is faith...you do things sometimes even though you don't see evidence. Right now I don't see evidence. I can look outside and see the sun shining and the flowers blooming and I know God is here and I can praise Him for that. But can I truly, honestly praise Him for these struggles while I'm in the middle of them?
I can look back and see struggles in the past, that I can now praise God for. They have shaped me in ways I could not have imagined. And I can say that although I never want to go through them again, I am honestly thankful for the lessons learned. But did I praise God in the midst of them? I doubt it.
So what do I do? I read a quote that says "God doesn't tell you to thank him for the negative circumstances. He says to thank Him while you're in the midst of them. Doing this shows that you trust Him to bring you out." So do I really, really trust Him to bring me (and others ) out? Or is it lip service?
Sometimes this walk is hard and more complex than I want to give thought to. And although it sounds like I am taking both sides of an argument, I cannot imagine walking this road without God.
I can go to Him with these questions. I can talk to Him and ask what to do. He made me with this inquisitive mind. He gave me the guts to go boldly before Him and ask Him what the deal is. He allows me to grieve a perceived unfairness, get angry at a perceived injustice and cry at a perceived situation unraveling before me. He is the only one who can bring justice, make it fair and knit the situation back together. He is the only one who can calm the storm raging in my heart.
So I turn to Him. I do thank Him for His love, His patience, His kindness to me. I do praise Him for my beautiful family, the joy of being a mother, and the privilege of being His child. And I ask Him for help with the rest...........
